Fall Cleanse

Week 2

Day 8

Good morning!

We are well into Phase 2. Hang in there! You can look forward to Phase 3 in the near future. It will be an easy, well-deserved and gentle re-entry to regular foods while we reset the digestive fire (aka agni).

One reminder during Phase 2 is to drink copious amounts of water. During Phase 1, you were drinking room temperature water, hot water, plus the Green Tonic . I realize that was a lot. We were trying to rehydrate the body and flush the liver and bile. The idea was to do the best you could.

In Phase 2, the only drink we emphasize is water and perhaps some herbal tea. It is important to stay hydrated by drinking plain room temperature water and sipping hot water every 10-15 minutes, so do your best.

In Phase 3, it is not required to eat apples, or the Beet Tonic and Green Tonic - these are all optional! Water, however, is very important! It can take two full weeks to entirely rehydrate the body.

Discomfort associated with ghee dosages: As you increase the dosage of ghee each morning, evaluate how you feel. If you have any nausea, weakness, discomfort or loose stools, you may want to consider staying at that same dose of ghee or going to a lower dose. If you have some loose stools but are feeling strong, you may keep increasing the dosages of ghee. When in doubt, don't increase the ghee.

Headaches: If you are still having trouble with headaches (and have followed the guidelines on page 139) then take 1/2 tsp of fresh grated ginger in warm water and swallow it all at once. This is a potent boost for a toxic headache. Also, increase your water intake.

Having Trouble?

If you are having trouble with the cleanse, follow any or all of these strategies:

  • Stop the herbs until you feel better. Then restart them, but only one dose a day with lunch.
  • Be sure to get the right amount of water and exercise.
  • Follow the Rejuvenate or Nourish Meal Options until you feel better.

Our bodies are always talking to us. The exact nature of your experience and the difficulties you are having is an indicator of exactly which body system is not working for you. In this way, the symptoms operate as great diagnostic tools to determine exactly where the digestive or detox problem is.

Please document your experience, particularly if you are having trouble. Then, I suggest you set up a consult either with myself or another Ayurvedic practitioner so we can really dig deep and understand your body better. Our bodies are always talking to us. Most of us just don't know how to listen. Use these experiences as a guide to help solve these problems so you can achieve your goal, which is to reset and strengthen your natural detox and digestive capacity - and feel amazing!

Yoga, Breathing, and Meditation

I also want to take a moment and remind you of the importance of the yoga, breathing, and meditation during Phase 2.

While I realize some of you are working during the cleanse and don't have much time for the yoga, breathing, and meditation, do the best you can. Not only do these three activities help relax your mind, create flexibility in the body, and loosen and flush out impurities, their greatest strengths are perhaps how they affect the mind and emotions.

Let me describe briefly what is happening to the subtle body system while we do the yoga, breathing and meditation:

  • Doing yoga with longer holds allows the prana (and oxygen) to penetrate the deep tissues, muscles and organs of the body.
  • Once the prana is freed by the yoga, the breathing exercises help to direct this prana, or life force, to the deepest tissues of the body and to the emotions or limbic centers of the mind.
  • Once the prana is moving freely, this activates another aspect of the subtle body system called the nadis. They are like meridians, and they also concentrate in subtle energy centers called chakras.
  • As the nadis stimulate the chakras, a process of transformational change is initiated. This process is understood to create more clarity so that the mind begins to loosen its hold on us.

As this happens, the need to be satisfied with food, money, power, or material possessions is weakened, and we can begin a process of emotional transformation. It is a step-by-step journey that often starts by declaring our independence from what others think and then towards being willing to be more vulnerable or sensitive and - maybe scariest of all - to be powerful. Not the kind of power that has power over anyone or anything.

Our nature is to be powerful, much like the sun is powerful. The sun gives life and warmth to just about everything and yet seems to need nothing in return.

MORNING GHEE

  • Drink 6 tsp of ghee (or 12 tsp if you are following the Advanced Ghee Doses). Increase the dosage only if the previous day's ghee dosage was comfortable.
  • Follow the Phase 2 guidelines (page 25), in addition to the Essential Guidelines (pages 34-57).

Today's Self-Inquiry Exercise

Day 8 - Drop Childhood Personality Traits

  • Make a list of what personality traits you had to create as a young child to be safe and secure as you grew up. Who did you have to become?
  • Then ask yourself, what aspects of that personality are still serving you today as an adult and what aspects of your personality are not?
  • Which aspects of your personality are holding you back?
  • Now ask yourself, what would you lose if you dropped those personality traits?

Phase 2 FAQ's

Q: There seems to be a lot of sodium in the Kitchari packets. I am sodium sensitive - is there a way to reduce this?

A: Each one-cup serving of Kitchari contains 20% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI), which is currently 2400mg. That means if you ate 5 servings this size, it would put you at the RDI. If you are sodium sensitive, please do not add salt to the kitchari, and just stick with the spice packets. You may also omit the spice packets altogether and create your own low-sodium spice blend.

Q: I am concerned that I am losing too much weight. Should I stop the cleanse?

A: If you feel you are losing too much weight, follow the Nourish Meal Option (pages 74-75) for the remainder of the cleanse, and eat 4 times a day instead of 3. Also, stick with the minimal ghee dosage (you can even stick with 2-3 tsp and not increase at all) and decrease all herbs to only one capsule per day at the midday (lunch) meal. Make sure to eat more avocados when we get into Phase 3.

Q: I am having a lot of trouble sleeping. Falling asleep is difficult and I have been consistently waking up at 3 or 4am. I need sleep! What could be causing this?

A: When the body detoxifies, the liver becomes very active between 10pm and 2am. This stimulation can keep some folks up. One trick is to get to bed early and not wait until 10 or 11pm to attempt sleep. You can also use an herb called Brahmi Brain, or the Sleep formulas by Baynan Botanicals, which boost the body's energy to sleep at night and cool the liver.

Q: I am experiencing constipation and I did not order Elim I. Prunes don't work for me. What can I do?

A: This may be an indication of more dry intestinal mucosa. If you did not order the Elim I, you can try to find Triphala at your local health food store.

Next, stick with the Rejuvenate or Nourish Meal Options as they include vegetables, which are full of fiber that will help get things moving. Also remember to do the daily yoga and exercise, as movement can help improve digestion as well.

In addition, during your daily self-massage, rub your belly for one minute in circles in each direction on an empty stomach. Aim to do this each morning and evening. All of these suggestions, plus extra hydration, should help stimulate the bowel.

Q: Digestive related pain? Does significant diarrhea today count? Can I keep up the ghee? The diarrhea takes a few hours after the ghee to set in. Should I give it one more day?

A: If the loose stools are uncomfortable then back off the ghee to a dose that makes it tolerable. The key is comfort and your stamina. Also, stop the Liver Repair for a few days and see if this helps. It is a bile flusher and can sometimes cause too much bile in the gut and loosen the stool.

Q: Yesterday I had a huge emotional release... I sobbed and sobbed. Last night I woke up a few times crying in my sleep... I'm not on my period and my reaction came out of the blue. Is this the releasing of old emotions that you are mentioning?

A: It is definitely common to feel emotional releases like this during the cleanse and is a good sign that you are turning over fat cells and emotional and physical toxins, so congratulations, you're on your way to being a lighter cleaner you! The self-inquiry activities I am offering in the daily emails can bring on this type of release as well. Release is normal, especially when detoxing.

Namaste, badass! You're almost there!
