For the next 4 videos, I'll be providing video notes as well. You can use these if you can't stream video, if you simply prefer to read, or if you want to dive into detail about the video concepts.
This step is about unlearning desire.
The reason why you want to drink and the reason why you want to over-drink is because your desire is strong, and you have that desire because you have literally taught yourself how to desire and over- desire drinking, and you can just as easily teach yourself the opposite. There’s a big difference between not doing something because you can’t do it and not doing something because you don’t know how. I want to suggest that once you learn this tool, you will know how to do this non-drinking thing. You’ll be able to cut back or eliminate drinking as much as you would like to do.
I’m going to teach you the skill in as few words as possible, so you can get started right away. Remember that you have conditioned your mind to desire alcohol, and here’s how you’ve done it with the model I use. There’s a circumstance ... It’s the fact, so you may go into a bar. Then, there’s your thoughts, “I want to drink.” Your thoughts cause your feelings, which is an urge or desire. Your action is you drink, and the result is that it’s a reward.
Whenever there’s this kind of programming where you’re rewarded at the end, it is something that you will repeat often to get that same reward, and then it will become involuntary. It will feel like it’s something you’re doing against your own will. It’s like driving a car. When you turn the wheel or you slam on the brakes, it seems instinctual to you. It’s really just something that you have learned by thorough repetition, so the way that we unlearn this desire is through a process called “interrupting your model.”
What we need to do is interrupt the model right here, and literally, stop rewarding that urge. As soon as you stop rewarding that urge and that trigger thought, you will stop having it. That is as simple as I can teach it to you, so just like when they stopped ringing that bell for those dogs, those dogs stopped drooling, the same will happen to you.
Now, the trick here is to get as many of these as you possibly can without giving the reward so you can literally condition yourself the opposite way of how you’ve conditioned yourself before. You’ve repeated this one thousands and thousands of times, so your association is very strong, and the involuntary reaction is very strong, but we can unlearn that just in the same way by repeating it as many times as we can.
The goal is to have as many urges as possible with "un-answering" the urge to drink. As soon as you do that, that’s when you will recondition your brain to something completely different. There are 3 options that you have at this point when you feel this urge. The first option you have is to drink, which will perpetuate this. The second option you have is to resist the drink and white-knuckle it, which will eventually lead to this and encourage this. The third option you have is allowing this emotion to be there unanswered. That’s what we have to do. We have to ring the bell, allow the drool, and do nothing with the food. Ring the bell, allow the drool, do nothing with the food. Eventually, that drool, the urgent desire will completely dry up.
